Since moving to Oakland, I’ve found a new form of commuting that is completely free and reliable: http://sfcasualcarpool.com/
Basically, all I do is go to a predetermined spot (about a 5 minute walk) and I open the door to a car and sit in and and say ‘Good morning’ and I get driven across the bay and dropped off downtown with a ‘Thank you’.
The driver saves time (at least a half an hour) and money (toll goes from $6 to $3) by getting to ride in the carpool lane. The rider gets a free ride. Win-win on both sides.
One thing that’s kind of weird…nobody talks. Nobody talks about anything whatsoever. It’s just dead silent (or NPR is on in a startling 93% of cars I’ve set foot in).
If you’ve got a casual carpool program in your city, I would highly recommend it.
